Jay Weaver and I would like to thank three folks for making this event happen this year: Both Ira Perry and John Amyot put together their respective traveling shows at no small expense. And Bruce Gardner chartered Joe Krolack's yacht just for this event.

Tip of the Day: When you are in charge of yelling "Heads" during a gybe, it is not considered bad form to listen to your own advise (see R3).

A J/29 beat the lightweight flyers once again in this year's race. Rush Street corrected out to win PHRF F class. We had wind all night this year, finishing early, averaging 6.2 knots over the 125 miles. Wind was around the beam for much of the race, so we had a great sail.

Special congratulations to Patriot and its new owner Lyndon Lattie (ex-Cherry Bomb) in their first race. They beat us boat for boat, although their rating puts them in a different class. And they sailed double-handed, while we had a crew of 5.

It was a small boat race this year - we corrected on most of the maxi class, (the big sleds). The overall PHRF winner was a Catalina 30 - winning a $5,000 watch.

Our single J-29 one-design event for 2009 in SoCal was the Acura-Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week, June 26-28.

Three days, seven races.  Friday and Saturday started with wind of 7-8 knots and finished up with winds around 14-16 knots.  Sedona was blazing fast on both days, out in front and generally sailing higher and similar speed to other boats.  With five bullets going into Sunday, Bruce and crew only had to show up on Sunday for the regatta win.  Rush Street tried hard to push Sedona with a little better downwind speed, but couldn’t quite get there.  Greg on Mac 5 had crew issues and had to drop out after one race  (after a 75 mile upwind delivery to get there).  Mario on Jolly J was close on  Saturday but only once managed to crack the top two.  In that race, Jolly had fouled Rush Street on a crossing and did a penalty turn with the chute up in about 5 seconds, losing virtually nothing and taking Rush Street in the race.

Sunday dawned clear with the wind hard right and blowing 16 knots as we left the harbor, later increasing to about 22.  The wind was up and down some in the first race, between 12 and 17 knots. Rush Street went with a heavy #1 while the others used blades, and the extra horsepower when the wind was down helped them take a first.  Sedona, with the regatta in hand, elected to skip the spinnaker for the 20 knot plus last race (blades all around for this one), and was treated to some entertaining wipeouts by Rush Street and Homer J.  Homer actually got pinned and had to cut a halyard to recover.

Great racing for all three days, good RC work, a fantastic sailing venue, and good parties.  This is a regatta to do someday.
