John Sieracki on ZULU, a FROB, took first in class (PHRF F)
this year in the 125 mile Newport Beach to Ensenada, Mexico
Race. ZULU beat all the lightweights - Hobie 33, Olson 30,
Soverel 33, Tripp 33 in a mostly light air race. Rush Street
(MHOB) was also in the race, but went the wrong way, trailing
ZULU by about 6 1/2 hours.
BTW, this makes four years in a row with J29s in podium positions
for this race, including two class wins.

" ... 117 entries in 13 classes including
a resurrected J-29 class,"
Five Southern California J29s raced off beautiful San Diego
last weekend, but Rush Street dominated with scores of 2-1-1-2-1.
Conditions were perfect; highs in the seventies, sunny skies,
and a moderate 8-14 knot sea breeze. For the San Diego YC
Results page , click Here
This was the first J29 one-design regatta held in San Diego.
But with at five J29s moored locally, it won’t be the last.
Next up for the SoCal Fleet is Long Beach Race Week (June
27-29). This year, we’re expecting seven boats!

VIEW FROM THE BACK . . . by ph
Seattle NOOD was a real success with four Canadian and four
US boats; five fractionals and three mast heads; long-time
owners and others relatively new to their boats. The conditions
were better than the weather reports suggested, with the race
committee getting six races off in two days -- a 2 hour delay
on saturday, and no finishes on Sunday were a disappointment,
but they did not dampen the spirit of the regatta.
The results were also better than I expected. Except for my
own boat, the result of each race were up for grabs. Local
MHs "Here and Now" and "Dangerous When
Wet" were dominate, but neither was
able to stay on top for every race with the Canadian
fracs "Equilibrium" and "Rhumb Line" keeping
the pressure on. With a difficult first day (only four crew),
and with a new
owner
this season "Godzilla" had a great second day climbing up the
ranks. Sunday races would have really shown who was able to
maintain constancy and would like have shuffled the deck a
little in the final results as everyone settled into the rhythm
of the event.
Additionally, it was a rather gentlemanly event with no protests or bumps on our course (that I saw or heard).
A big thanks to the four Canadian boats for making the effort; the CYC, SYC and NOOD teams for putting together a well run event; and all the crew that made the commitment.
We'll check in in December and see what we can assemble for 2009 . . .

Breeze On off Long Beach!
- Pokey uh da LBC, 07 July 2008
Classic Long Beach sailing conditions greeted the six J29s competing for
the 2008 West Coast Championships at Acura Long Beach Race Week.
The seven-race regatta started in a gentle eight-knot sea breeze that was
ideal for the class-legal asymmetrical spinnaker of Bruce Lotz’s Sedona.
After winning both races Friday, it looked like Sedona would be unstoppable.
Upwind he was fast, but downwind, that asso was merciless.
Then Saturday rolled in and it was Breeze On! By the second race of the
day, the battle turned to blades upwind and deep angles off. With the wind
blowing twenty and above, the asso was no longer the sail to beat. It was
now the fractional-rigged Cherry Bomb’s turn to shine. By the end of
the day, Cherry had surged to a slim one-point lead over Sedona and Larry
Leveille’s always-competitive Rush Street.
But Sedona came back to win the first race on Sunday, while Cherry finished
third. The two-point swing gave Sedona a one-point lead going into the last
race of the regatta. Homer finished second and was now challenging Rush for
the final podium spot.
Just seconds before the starting horn, traffic from the random-leg fleet
twice delayed the race. By the third attempt, wind was tearing down the course
at twenty knots. When the starter’s flag finally dropped, it was Mac
5 and Homer J near the boat-end, Cherry Bomb at the pin, and Sedona and Rush
Street crossing mid-line. Homer tacked first. About half way up the leg,
Rush went over. But Sedona seemed satisfied to pin Cherry to the left. Eventually
Cherry was forced to tack and duck. Then Sedona tacked to cover. Midway across
the course, Rush tacked on Sedona. Cherry was being hammered by both Rush
and Sedona, and tacked for clear air.
Meanwhile, the right side was paying big for Homer, who was now on the layline.
Rush and Sedona took Homer’s stern, but kept sailing on port. This
time Sedona was pinned, and the layline had come and gone! After some “discussion” between
boats, Rush agreed to tack. Sedona followed. Cherry made some gains in the
center, and at the weather mark, the first four boats rounded nose-to-tail.
The three symmetrical chutes popped and turned DDW, then quickly jibed for
the finish. But Sedona’s set was slow. By the time her crew jibed their
asso, the leader going into the final race had fallen to fourth.
Bob Lenard’s Homer J held off a hard charging Rush Street and earned
his first win of the regatta. Rush crossed just seven seconds later, but
lost the place to Cherry Bomb on corrected time. Sedona finished fourth,
only a few boat-lengths further back.
When the scores were totaled, a scant three points separated the top four
boats. It was a super competitive regatta, but just like last year, Cherry
Bomb corrected on the faster MHOBs in the final race to win the regatta.
However, the big surprise of the weekend was the strong performance of the
Dana Point boats. In his first class race in recent memory, Bruce Lodz drove
Sedona to three race wins and a second place overall. While Bob Lenard’s
Homer J grabbed 1st and 2nd place finishes on the final day to earn the third
place trophy.
For complete results, check out the Long Beach Race Week Results page.
All and all, it was a great weekend: Perfect weather; seven close one-design
races; a J29 dock party with a keg of microbrew, sushi, chips, and cupcakes;
old friends and new (Sedona and Mac Five); no protests; no broken gear; and
more than three dozen happy but worn out J29 sailors.

McBride’s site ,

Next up for the SoCal J29s is the PHRF Championships in Hurricane Gulch
(San Pedro) on August 9 and 10. After that, it’s Long Beach J-Fest,
